A Reflection on Memorial Day
May 26, 2025I would like to recognize this very important day- Memorial Day. For many, this day is the end of a long weekend that has been filled with family, food, and the start of summer fun.
But, Memorial Day was really established as a time to remember those who gave their lives in service to this country—those who made the ultimate sacrifice so others could enjoy the freedom and opportunities we often take for granted- like being able to enjoy this wonderful, long weekend.
As I get older, I find myself reflecting more and more on legacy—on what we leave behind, how we show up for others, and what it means to truly live while we can. Memorial Day is a reminder that freedom, safety, and the simple pleasures we enjoy every day have been paid for by others’ ultimate sacrifices, and it’s humbling to me to think about that. To think about the courage it takes to step into the unknown, to stand for something bigger than yourself, to say yes even when the stakes are high. I find myself thinking about the families who carry the weight of that loss every day—those who hold on to memories and stories, who mark this day not with a barbecue, but with a quiet ache in their hearts.
It also makes me reflect on life in a different way. The ultimate sacrifices made by others allow us the simple joys we get to experience every day—a walk with our dog, a hug from someone we love, the sound of birds in the morning. The chance to wake up each day and decide how we want to live.
Memorial Day reminds me of the importance of presence, of savoring the time we have, and of living in a way that feels true and meaningful. It’s not about big, grand gestures—sometimes it’s the small, quiet choices we make each day that add up to a life well-lived. To me, this is how I want to honor those who have sacrificed their lives- to live the best life that I can.
So, as we move through this day, whether it’s filled with sunshine and celebration or a little more stillness and thoughtfulness, I feel there’s room to hold both. To honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice—and to cherish the life we get to live today. If you are missing someone today, may you find comfort in the love you shared and the memories that remain.
Thank you for reading. Wishing you peace and gratitude on this Memorial Day. Please take care of your heart, your dreams, and the people you love.
